farm life update...

farm life update...

we are still waiting for the baby ducks to start laying eggs.  based off the original girls, who started laying exactly 5 months after getting them, it should be on the 27th.  that will be really exciting too!   pictures of their first eggs shall be coming soon!  it's amazing how fast time is going.

march 1, 2012

just the other day...

in the garden:  i realized that i  planted pumpkin to soon so now part of it is dying off, but new growth is coming so i like to think that we will  still have some to pick come halloween time.  that would be so awesome!-  to go outside and pick our halloween pumpkin.   i will probably harvest the other ones soon and  make some pumpkin pie so they don't go to waste.  the watermelon is now growing, farmer son 2 thought it was "huge" so that will be a great day when we eat our first home grown watermelon.

in school- our second week is now done.  this week we made pictographs with cars, trucks and bikes.  it was fun and something new and different.

math takes a lot of time, but i feel like they are learning a lot, really learning.  i like it.  reading is coming along too.  a lot of new signs going on.  farmer son 1 is picking up on it quickly and when he gets stuck farmer son 2 is more than willing to help him.  sometimes he tells him to finger spell it because not all words have a sign. it's wonderful to see them communicating and helping each other.  it's also mind blowing  to see how fast they pick up on new things and it sticks.once they get it they get it.  it's great!    farmer son 2 is getting it also.  that was a BIG concern of mine.  how do you teach you hard of hearing/ deaf child how to read?  i was told that I would have to use sight words and that he will never be able to learn phonetically.  granted he isn't a complete reader yet and there is still a ton of progress to be made but those initial moments are done and it's a good start for what is to come.  know what i mean?   so to see him be able to sound out the word and then put it together  really is awesome. i am looking forward to see how much progress they make. i love it at we are building this good, strong foundation for their future to build upon.   i love sharing these moments with them.

farmer dad is good. he is in the middle of setting up this extensive rain barrel system.  he got twelve, i think,  55 gallon drums that he is cleaning out and transforming it into rain barrels.  he set up a gutter around part of the roof too to catch more water.  when you think about it, we were wasting all this water.  it's really nice how soon  we will be able to use  the water we catch  to water a vast majority of our plants and trees.  after they are all up, i'm going to paint them.  that's very exciting too.

so that is what's going on here.  i'd lik to share a cute farmer 1 moment... the other day we were in the front when i found a baby praying mantis.  i showed  the farmer sons.  farmer son 1 took it and named it good hunter.  the next thing you know he is calling for me all excited " good hunter knows how to sign.  good hunter just signed eat!" i;m getting teary eyed just thinking about it.  it was such a good moment.  he is aware of signs and what they mean. not only that but he thought that good hunter was signing to him.  how cute is that.

til next time,
farmer mom

So cute that he thought the praying mantis was "talking" to him via sign. wonder what else he'll think he's saying next time?
